Our Philosophy

The founding of The Spillway began with three Core Beliefs:

  1. Hurt People Can Hurt People

  2. White People are Hurting

  3. Our collective healing is required for our collective liberation

Beyond White Supremacy: Healing White Men as Tools for Violence Prevention and Harm Reduction

On March 23, 2022, Ben Jealous invited The Spillway to share our work with the School of Social Policy and Practice and People for the American Way. We were joined by Ben’s father, Fred Jealous, who has worked extensively with men at the organization he founded, Breakthrough Men’s Community. And Pablo Cerdera, Associate Director of the Restorative Practices at Penn program.

Runtime: 1 hour, 53 seconds.

Tips for exploring The Spillway philosophy

We have broken these Core Beliefs down into more manageable conversations. These conversations have three different levels depending on how in-depth you want to go in a given topic:

  • MACRO

Big picture thinking. Setting the whole scene. Pouring the foundation. More sound bite than substance.

  • MEZZO

Focusing on an area. Having a conversation. Building the house. Part sound bite part substance.

  • MICRO

Detail work. A beat within the conversation. Painting and finishing the house. More substance than sound bite.

On the Philosophy page, you’ll see Macro, Mezzo, and Micro content levels in the same window. It will look something like this:
